The interaction between bees, people, plants and other animals, makes beekeeping in an urban environment very fascinating. The work bees do inside and outside the hive is vital for all individuals on our earth.

By creating Vulkan Bee Garden on Mathallen, we bring more bees to the city. In addition, we want to give visitors information on how they can contribute to the environment, and create involvement around bees.

Mathallen is an excellent location for bees. With the areas around Vulkan; the Aker River, Telthusbakken and around the old Aker church, there is great access to pollen, nectar and water. The honeybees collect this food and turn it into Vulkan Honey during the summer season.

The first step in creating Vulkan Bee Garden, was placing two standard beehives on the roof between Mathallen (Oslos Food Court) and Dansens Hus in the middle of May 2014. We used honeybees from the kind specie European honeybee (Apis mellifera).

You can see bees on roofs in many large cities all over the world. We wanted to do something new, by linking art, architecture, environment and a sustainable society. Snøhetta has designed and produced new homes for our bees, and the result is two amazing beehives. The natural honeycomb geometry was the inspiration for the form and pattern, along with the bees own production pattern; the hexagon-shaped cells bees store their honey in. Using a light colored wood with a finish that is honey in tone makes the hives look like big hexagon jars of honey.

Vulkan Bee Garden was officially opened the 25th of June  and the design hives were shown for the first time. Each hive holds a bee queen, and they were given the names Sonja and Ingrid. Sonja and her colony are placed on a scale, which measures how much honey they produce. We also get information about the temperature inside the brood box and amount of rain during the day. This is useful information in planning the honey harvest.

You can follow the statistic from beehive Sonja from may-15 here.

During 2015, we are making a green roof on Vulkan Bee garden. This will be a green oasis with organic plants and vegetables. With this part of the project finalized, the bees will find more nectar close by.
